Hip and Knee Replacements Raise Heart Attack Risks

Hip and Knee Replacements Raise Heart Attack Risks

When patients are scheduling  joint replacement surgery, we prescribe compression stockings for post operative use.  Worn at all times throughout the recovery period, they prevent blood clot formation. Patients who receive total knee replacements are at greater risk for blood clots and heart attacks. Some surgeons recommend prolonged use of compression stockings even after the initial recovery period. We also recommend careful monitoring of mobility when traveling for prolonged periods by car or air. Simple exercise like walking or stretching will mitigate the risks.
